Policy for the office is established by the Board of Animal Health, made up of representatives from the state's major livestock groups.

The state veterinarian is responsible for controlling, preventing and eradicating diseases in all animals in the state, including livestock and pets. The office is also responsible for verifying the disease status of animals for export.
